THE
CLINIC
In December 2004 a foundation was set up that is
dedicated to offering hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The
foundation’s clinic is located in Zwijndrecht and
operates under the name
CareSharing. CareSharing is an organization that
aims at helping children and adults afflicted with
brain damage. They offer full and individualized
therapy under professional care, with the goal of
improving the quality of life of the patient.
For
parents and family of a disabled child or adult it
is a constant quest to find the therapy most
suitable for them. Family members of a patient with
brain damage are often left out in the cold with
regular therapy.
CareSharing
endeavors to work together with the family in
finding a solution that will put the patient’s
possibilities to optimum use and that aims at
helping the patient reach his/her full potential.
They try not to emphasize the problem too much, but
to focus on what is still possible for the patient,
without claiming to be able to work miracles.
There were already a few clinics in the Netherlands
that applied Oxygen Therapy, but they do not do so
in the area of neurology. In the clinic in
Zwijndrecht there is a cylinder tank of about
two-and-a-half meters in length and two meters in
height.

During the treatment session of approximately one
hour the tank is sealed air-tight. Pressure is
gradually raised to approximately 1.4 atmospheric
pressure. Patients are provided with a sort of
“space mask”, into which 100 % pure oxygen is blown.
If a patient is unable to sit up by his/herself, a
parent will accompany them into the tank. During the
session one of the clinic’s assistants is present in
the tank. Outside of the tank an operator monitors
the readings of the tank and has video access to the
tank’s interior. Audio communication is also
available.
